Avalokiteśvara

This painting of Avalokiteśvara in a white robe is an earlier piece by Xia Jing Shan. Sitting on the head of Avalokiteśvara is a Nirmāna-Buddha crown and a splendidly magnificent headscarf. A landscape of mountains and rocks is shown to create a state of Zen in the style of literati painting. The image conveys Avalokiteśvara’s sense of ease and elegance. The painting is inscribed with the following words inspired by The Diamond Sutra, “then Tathâgata can be seen and perceived,” which Xia had adapted into, “then Avalokiteśvara can be seen and perceived,” to ingeniously incorporate the Bodhisattva’s venerable name in the artwork.
