Five Dragon Kings Paying Homage to Avalokiteśvara

This painting uses the meticulous gonbi style with intense colors to depict the scene of the Five Sacred Dragons meeting Avalokiteśvara. Each of the divine characters are vividly portrayed with intricate lines, with carefully illustrated background consisting of peculiar rocks and rolling waves. The Five Sacred Dragons succumb to Avalokiteśvara’s benevolent divine power and vow to undergo training and not cause any harm to the beings in the mortal world. In Indian culture, Avalokiteśvara is considered a divine protector of the sea, which is why sacred dragons are often seen in portraits of Avalokiteśvara. Xia Jing Shan incorporated his masterful calligraphy and painting skills to illustrate Buddhist teaching and philosophy. He turned words into images and recounted stories and plots in fascinating ways.
