As a painting with full-length landscapes, the protagonist, Arhat, holding his long eyebrow in hand stares to his right. The buck with a piece of ganoderma in the mouth nestles next to Arhat, evoking an imagery of longevity. Xia Jing Shan uses contrasting cold/warm colors and adorns pink-robed Arhat’s surroundings with green landscapes. The textural changes in human characters, animals, rocks and trees against a well-layered background are sufficient indicators of Xia’s ink-and-wash prowess. The uncanny arrangement of the host-guest relationship further accentuates the simplistic rustic Luohan iconography.
