Bodhidharma Crossed the Sea

In this work, Bodhidharma is standing in the ocean, symbolizing he cross the ocean to bring the Zen of Tianzhu (India) to the eastern land. Placing Bodhidharma on a rock and crossing the ocean is not based on any scriptures or writings. Rather, it is a reflection of ingenuity in Xia Jing Shan’s creativity, in response to his closing statement of “do not seek without in learning to becoming Buddha, but have a clear heart to see your true nature.” This composition takes a panoramic structure without leaving any blank space, and is one of the more special works in Xia Jing Shan’s Bodhidharma series.
