Arhat (Nagasena)

Arhat Nagasena was a venerable Buddhist sage famously known as “The Arhat Who Cleans His Ears”. The name Nagasena means “an army of dragons”, and he was also an elephant king. The Nagasena Bhiksu Sutra was circulated in ancient India, which included records of discussions of Buddhist teaching between Nagasena and Indo-Greek King Menander and also the king’s conversion to the Buddhist faith. This painting shows a combination of fine brushwork and freehand brushwork, referencing myths and legends for the depiction of the Arhat’s exotic features. The rocks depicted showcase wrinkling textures that are robust and dynamic, creating an interesting contrast with the curved cloudlike lines on the garment, with the Arhat’s leisurely sense of ease accentuated.
