The great sage Nandimitra is also known as “The Dragon-Subduing Arhat”. After he passed on to the next world, his disciples compiled the stories of the Sixteen Arhats told by the sage before his death into the renowned book, Glossary and Vocabulary for Nandimitravadana.
Depicted by Xia Jing Shan in this painting is the legendary scene of the sage taming a dragon. The sage is intricately depicted sitting in the lotus position on a round woven futon, while the dragon is also contrastingly illustrated using intricate brushwork. A potted plant of narcissus is shown to allude to the sage’s righteousness and flawlessness.
