Vanavasin ārya is polite and studious, often learning under a banana tree, so he is also known as the banana Arhat. Xia Jing Shan carefully depict the ārya sitting on banana leaves, in a serene atmosphere as he is trying to gather his thoughts after reading the scriptures, giving a sense of transcendental understanding.
