This painting depicts a man kneeling down to Avalokiteśvara dressed in a white robe. Lotuses are seen blooming on a tumultuous sea, which symbolizes the attainment of an enlightened and righteous mind. Avalokiteśvara is depicted here in a literati painting style, with intricate fine lines and washes applied. The ethereal clouds and fog and the blurry sea appear boundless and borderless, with the white-robed Avalokiteśvara’s gentle and beautiful image of benevolence highlighted. Eye-catching details are seen with intensely colored rocks speckled with green and blue moss and also on the textured cliffs.
The inscription by Xia Jing Shan serves as a reminder for people to study the teaching of Avalokiteśvara and to seek to attain the Six Paramitas, which are: generosity, proper conduct, tolerance, diligence, concentration, and wisdom; this leads to the way of achieving supreme dharma.
