Xia Jing Shan placed Avalokiteśvara in padmasana position on the tree roots, and also there are strong, tumultuous waves around, Avalokiteśvara remains unmoved, expressing the common Buddhist saying of Sad-Indriya (six roots) being clean: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and thought are all cut off from desires, and not disrupted by the external environment. This work also embodies the experience that Xia Jing Shan has in traditional Chinese painting in terms of paint stroke and ink usage, where smooth flowing lines and different folding methods stacks to create billowing waves, the intertwining roots of the withered tree, and the sense of flowing for Avalokiteśvara.
