A high and broad forehead, bright eyes, beard, and large earrings is the classical Bodhidharma look, while holding a shoe in one hand is the traditional image of Bodhidharma “returning to the west with one shoe.” Xia Jing Shan’s creations were influenced by western realism art, and focus on the light and dark contrast on the face, integrating Chinese calligraphic inking with texture and rubbing techniques, meticulously draw out the expression of the characters. White lines are used to outline the clothing, showing Bodhidharma’s carefree casualness.
