The painting matches a light purple-red color setting after the texture and rubbing inking, displaying Zhong Kui’s plain and carefree appearance. Dotted touches were used to create the background and withered leaves of the old, dry tree. The texture of the rocks applied mineral-based cyan and malachite green to clash with the ink, and the moisture content in the colors was well controlled. Xia Jing Shan excels at integrating highly variable inking techniques to create connotations in the imagery, and through the wild and restrained image of Zhong Kui, portrays that everyone has Buddha-nature, which is not trapped and shackled by form, but is rather the enlightenment and realization of oneself.
