This painting depicts scenes of daily life in Jiangnan, the home of fish and rice in south China. The grain harvests are always plentiful, while wives of fishermen live on boats, with happy, serene scenes of children rearing and playing. The prototype women under Xia Jing Shan’s brush come from ladies figures of the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The thin, long, almost strand-like lines represent the delicate, feminine nature of women, while complex detailed short strokes create lines that give the fishing boats a sense of texture. The breeze gently blowing raises ripples and waves along the riverside. Each willow leaf on the drooping branches is fused, blended and washed using water ink to create the far-stretching space.
