Ākāśagarbha with the Six Dragons

Mañjuśrī is one of the four major Bodhisattvas in Chinese Buddhism, symbolizing wisdom being in the top rank. In the image, Mañjuśrī sits atop dabao lotus, holding a sword of wisdom in his right hand, surrounded and guarded by six auspicious flying dragons, symbolizing being able to cut away all the troubles and have clear mind.
In terms of creating the image, fine meticulous strokes with heavy chroma and hue complements each other, and through the dragon’s rich body language, the scales are layered and stacked. Xia Jing Shan especially use white lead to wash out the film-like, muslin material of the bodhisattva’s clothing and the back lighting, while the ethereal clouds use light and dark smudges to add rhythm. Combined with think, solid indigo background, this brings out the honorable and respectable image of Mañjuśrī’s superlative elegance.
