As a painting of traditional human life & talents aggregation where literati and intellects gather for artistic exchanges, this work shows how well-versed Ruism (Confucianism) scholars tend to project their sentiments onto the landscapes, gardens and woods, with a backdrop of sky scraping pine trees, lakeside rocks and bamboo forests to symbolize the intellects’ detached other-worldly tendencies, self-contained loftiness and aesthetic leanings.
Xia Jing Shan’s literati paintings are mostly done with exquisite Gongbi techniques complemented with subtle coloring for a neatly structured composition to convey contextual elegance and poised serenity.
