Zhong Kui sits alone by the cliff as if occupied in thoughts, which may take us to faraway places, but ultimately one returns to the law of nature. Balanced on the tree top ready for action, the black gibbon adds to the sense of fun. The painting composition, adopts Chinese art theory of “three distances” which consists of 3 sections: the rolling waves; the gaze between Zhong Kui and the black gibbon; the white crane in the left lower corner of the painting. The white crane is an auspicious sign representing safety, symbolizing the arrival of brightness.
