Zhong Kui

Zhong Kuei is best known in Chinese myths as the exorcist deity, also an embodiment of justice. Wearing red attires and Wushamao (black headwear) of a court official, plus a huge beard, is Zhong’s classic image. In this painting, Xia Jing Shan depicts the protagonist with ink-and-wash Xieyi (freehand) techniques. Zhong Kuei’s robe is smudged from black into red for a halo effect with a unique charm. In the background are patterns, textures of rocks, grass and wood being outlined with such fine details and complemented with colors to accentuate the protagonist.
