Xia Jing Shan inherited the traditional painting styles, and often use Zhong Kui as his subject. This work combines these two elements to create a new image for Zhong Kui. In the image, fine brushes illustrate Zhong Kui holding a fan and hiding his face behind it, swaying in the wind as the boatman ferry them across. Willow branches drooping down with elegant reeds are in the background, and the emotions are expressed through these objects. This is in response to the artist’s inscription, realizing that “those who have achieved Tao are neither arrogant nor prideful”.
