Bodhi Avalokiteśvara

Illustrated with red ink, Avalokiteśvara is depicted sitting on a bodhi leaf in the lotus position, with a hallow of light coming from the back. The textures on her garment are illustrated fluidly with calligraphic strokes, with rich, rhythmic layers created to show Avalokiteśvara’s relaxed and poised divine image. Bodhi is a Sanskrit name translated as “enlightenment” or “awakening”, and the bodhi tree earned its name because the Shakyamuni Buddha reached enlightenment whilst meditating under a bodhi tree.
