Zhong Kui

Zhong Kui is depicted in this painting wearing an official robe, black gauze official’s hat, and he is forcefully marching forward with a sword in his hand. Lyrical brushstrokes are used to create the creases and textures on his robe, with ink wash effects created in red. With harmoniously intense and light shades of ink, the calligraphic strokes and the dynamic movement of the character bring the painting together in a cohesive manner. Xia Jing Shan looked deep into the meaning behind the concept of “enlighten the heart to see one’s own true nautre” through depicting Zhong Kui and believed that only through self-learning, self-training, self-awakening, and self-awareness could one then understand Buddhism’s intricate essence.
