The white robe on the Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) is depicted with intense, robust lines of ink, with cadence, rhythm, inflection, and intonation expressed through the brushwork. In contrast, light and delicate lines are used on the face to show the Goddess of Mercy’s peaceful and gentle beauty. The rock formation in the painting is depicted in shades of green applied with ink wash effects. Dustings of gold powder further enhance the textures on the rocks, creating an image of magnificent splendor. The Avalokiteśvara is seen still in the midst of motions, which shows the spiritually symbolic goddess’s immense wisdom of being free of desires and mundane thoughts, with stillness being more significant than movements.
